How to buid a playground with little resources but a lot of motivated young volunteers
Through a friend here in Popayan I got to know the community of Santa Rosa (a rural quite poor suburb of Popayan) and especially the students of grade 11. They told me that they want to build a playground in a lot behind the school to provide a space for the children of the community. They explained to me that they can get donations of the basic materials (wood and wheels) but that they lacked further resources to buy the rest of the necessary material.
I liked the idea, so I started to collect money in Germany – through my former schools, through a friend who works in a cinema and set up a donation box and amongst my friends and family. The idea was to construct the playground with as little resources as possible and exclusively by volunteers. The students of grade 11 as well as some members of the community and three teachers were more than prepared to contribute the labour during their free time. The community also managed to establish the contact to a technician who had already built various playgrounds and who also contributed his time and work on a voluntary basis.
Thus, after about three weeks of hard work on the weekends and in the evenings, the playground was finished. Last week, the students of 11th grade handed it over to the children who will start school this year.
Thanks to Herlyn, who contributed a lot of additional work producing this video as a present to me, you can see yourself how we built the playground:
